Water Resources Engineering Internship

Summary: Unpredictable weather patterns dynamically drive the flows on the Mississippi River.  The Internet of Things has created the capacity to provide holistic river data to stakeholders in near real time.  This position will tackle issues from data collection and publication to floodplain modelling and mapping in order to improve stewardship and engage the public.  The successful applicant will get the opportunity to work in and explore some of the 250+ lakes and watercourses in the 4,353 km2 Canadian Mississippi River watershed.

 

 Main Responsibilities (This is not an exhaustive list)

 

  • Assist with floodplain modelling and mapping studies.
  • Perform topographic and bathymetric field surveys.
  • Install and troubleshoot automated sensing systems including all sensors, dataloggers, power supply systems and communications equipment.
  • Develop MVCA's prototype Arduino datalogger to increase reliability and durability.
  • Assist with compiling data, data entry, labelling photos, producing summary reports, etc.
  • Assist with capital infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with the MVCA’s flood forecasting and warning or low water response programs.
  • Maintain daily work records and submit a written summary at the conclusion of the contract.

 Required Education/Experience/Skills

  • Enrolled in a university or college program including computer science, software, environmental, water resources or civil engineering (or make a pitch for your qualifications in your cover letter).
  • Self-reliant, self-starter, self-motivated, requiring minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, collaborative decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Digital skills to understand and use digital systems, tools and applications and to process digital information.
  • Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Computer programming or coding experience is an asset (C++, Python, R).
  • Experience working with Arduino and environmental sensors is an asset.

Contract Length: 16 weeks (May-September), 

 

Salary Range: $19.00 – 20.50/hr
